What is ‘Bubatz’? German Chancellor Candidate’s Reaction Goes Viral

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and his Union challenger Friedrich Merz (CDU) have had a televised showdown.

And in addition to the big debate on asylum policy, the discussion also focused on care and the partial legalization of cannabis.

But at first, the candidate for chancellor Merz had no idea what to do with the term “Bubatz”.

On the live streaming portal Twitch, after the televised duel on ARD and ZDF, he was asked whether “Bubatz” (a term used for cannabis in Germany) would remain legal: “Will Bubatz remain legal?” he was asked.

“What is Bubatz?” he asked.

Merz then said: “If you mean cannabis, then I say: No, we want to correct this again.”

According to him, “there is an explosive level of crime related to this issue and I want to protect my children and grandchildren from legally taking drugs that are gateway drugs to hard drugs.”
