A councillor in the UK has resigned after being accused of trying to blow up a neighbour’s cat.
James Garnor has resigned from his post as councillor in Whittlebury, Northamptonshire, after a video emerged of his neighbour’s cat being hit by an explosion.
Suki, 11, was left with scratches after stepping on a bird table moments before the explosion. Garnor is suspected of using remote-controlled devices to set off the explosion.
Now a statement from Whittlebury Council said Garnor had “resigned on Friday 7th February, with immediate effect”.
“We understand the concerns raised by the community and want to reassure everyone that we take all animal welfare issues seriously,” the council added.
While Garnor was interviewed and shown footage of the incident, Northamptonshire police decided there was not enough evidence to press criminal charges.
Instead, the case was dealt with under anti-social behaviour legislation.
Suki’s owner – known only as Nikki – told The Telegraph: “For me, it’s like a Jeffrey Dahmer thing. I felt physically ill.”
