Fans were eagerly awaiting Angie Stone’s performance this weekend, but instead, they are now mourning the sudden and tragic loss of the beloved Grammy-nominated R&B singer. Stone passed away at the age of 63 following a fatal car accident in the early hours of Saturday, March 1.
The accident occurred around 4 a.m. as Stone was returning to Atlanta from Alabama. According to reports, the vehicle she was traveling in flipped over and was struck by a large truck. While others in the cargo van survived the crash, Stone tragically did not.
Her longtime manager and music producer, Walter Millsap III, confirmed the news to The Associated Press. Millsap shared that he was informed of Stone’s passing by her daughter, Diamond, and her former bandmate, Blondy, from the iconic hip-hop group The Sequence. Diamond later took to Facebook to express her grief, writing, “My mommy is gone,” accompanied by crying emojis.
Stone was set to perform at the halftime show of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) men’s championship basketball game on Saturday. In a heartfelt tribute, CIAA Chaplain Pastor Jerome Barber led a moment of silence during the game to honor her memory.
CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams-Parker shared her condolences, praising Stone for using her talent, passion, and presence to inspire strength and hope in others.
Stone first rose to prominence as a member of The Sequence, one of the pioneering female hip-hop groups.
