In a bold response to Donald Trump’s presidency, several coffee shops in Canada are renaming a well-known drink. Since Trump took office, his controversial remarks have provoked strong reactions from Canadians, ranging from suggesting that Canada should become the 51st state to referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “Governor Trudeau.”
Additionally, Trump proposed a 25% tariff on Canadian goods as part of his efforts to bolster US borders against the flow of fentanyl, according to the Telegraph. In light of Trump’s rhetoric and tariff policies, many Canadians have expressed their frustrations by rebranding their “Americano” coffee—made with espresso and hot water—as “Canadianos.”
William Oliveira, the owner of Toronto’s Cafe Belém, shared with The Post that while he prefers his café to remain apolitical, he wanted to demonstrate support for his country. Oliveira noted that customers appreciate the clever name change, and when someone orders an Americano, staff playfully remind them of the new name for the drink.
