An East Ayrshire farm has launched the UK’s most expensive coffee to help fund a zero-waste dairy.
Mossgiel Farm said the £344 purchase, which includes 34 shares in the business, will turn customers into investors in sustainable dairy farming.
The drink is made with espresso and steamed milk from Mossgiel Farm in Mauchline. It will be available in 13 Scottish cafes from November 23.
Mossgiel’s coffee is the UK’s most expensive, a title previously held by a coffee at Shot London in Mayfair, which cost £265 and was made with Japanese Typica beans.
Cunningham, who returned to his family farm in 2016 after the loss of his father and grandfather, said he hopes the “shock factor” of the price of the coffee will make consumers think differently.
“This coffee costs almost 80 times more than the average UK coffee, but it’s so much more than just a nice drink,” he said.
“You’re investing in a sustainable future for farming and joining a movement that is changing the dairy industry. We know it sounds crazy, but when you break it down, it’s a pretty good deal. How much is the future of farming worth?”
Cunningham said 290 people had backed the campaign so far and encouraged more to join in making a difference in an industry controlled by “big dairy” by reducing plastic waste, using renewable energy and prioritising animal welfare.
The farm previously became the first dairy in the UK to eliminate single-use plastics.
