Early Life and Background
Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone was born into a diverse family. His mother, Jacqueline “Jackie” Stallone (née Labofish), was a professional wrestling promoter from Washington, D.C., with Breton French and Ukrainian Jewish ancestry. His father, Francesco “Frank” Stallone Sr., was an Italian immigrant from Gioia del Colle who moved to the U.S. in the 1930s.
Sylvester is the elder son; his younger brother is actor and musician Frank Stallone. Many biographies note that Stallone’s full birth name is “Michael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone.” His mother revealed in an interview that he was originally named “Tyrone,” inspired by actor Tyrone Power, but his father changed it to “Sylvester.” As a child, his nickname was “Binky,” but he adopted the nickname Mike or Michael after classmates began calling him “Stinky.” His middle name, “Gardenzio,” is a variation of the Italian name “Gaudenzio,” which he often shortens to “Enzio.”
Overcoming Challenges
Complications during Stallone’s birth required the use of two pairs of forceps, which inadvertently severed a nerve, resulting in paralysis on the lower left side of his face—including parts of his lip, tongue, and chin. This gave him his distinctive snarling look and a slurred speech. During childhood, he was often bullied because of this, but he coped by pursuing bodybuilding and acting.
He spent part of his early years in foster and boarding care. At age five, he rejoined and moved back with his family to Maryland. In the early 1950s, his father moved the family to Washington, D.C., to open a beauty school, while his mother opened a women’s gym called Barbella’s in the same city. After his parents’ divorce, Sylvester initially stayed with his father at age 11 but later moved to Philadelphia to live with his mother at age 15.
