Their story began on what Josibelk calls the “best and worst day” of her life—June 25, 1998. Five-year-old Josibelk faced a terrifying apartment fire. She was choking on thick smoke, overwhelmed and confused, until suddenly everything went dark. But then, Peter arrived. At the time, he was a patrolman responding to the chaos. As a firefighter pulled a tiny, unresponsive girl from the flames, that firefighter handed her—limp and unbreathing—to Peter. With medics still on the way, Peter didn’t hesitate. His quick actions and training kicked in. He jumped into the back of his patrol car, started CPR, and kept going as his partner sped toward the hospital. Every second counted. And by the time they arrived, Josibelk was breathing again—a miracle in the making.
Peter humbly credits the teamwork of dispatchers, firefighters, and hospital staff, but his decisive intervention was undeniably crucial that day.
Josibelk still treasures the teddy bear Peter gave her at the hospital. Imagine the bond formed during such a harrowing moment. That search led her to an article referencing the fire—and, more unexpectedly, to Peter. A quick Facebook search later, and they reconnected!
Since then, these two remarkable people have shared meals, exchanged updates, and built a friendship that spans decades. From a young girl rescued from a fire to a college graduate ready to make her mark on the world, their journey highlights how one act of kindness can ripple through a lifetime.
