The UN has denounced the rise in sexual violence against children in Haiti. The country is facing gang violence that controls 85% of the capital.
“The appalling increase in sexual violence against children in Haiti is turning their bodies into a battlefield,” said James Elder, a UNICEF representative in Geneva, accusing armed gangs of subjugating and raping children.
In 2024 alone, the recruitment of children by armed groups increased by 70%.
“Almost half of the members of armed groups are now children — some as young as eight,” Elder added.
