Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his reliance on both Ukrainian and European unity, as well as the rational decision-making of the United States, amidst an escalating crisis in Kyiv’s relationship with its primary ally, the U.S., under President Donald Trump.
Recent reports indicate that Trump has labeled Zelensky as a “dictator without elections,” warning that he must act quickly or risk losing his position.
This situation arises as Trump seeks a rapid resolution to the war in Ukraine, causing concern among Washington’s European allies who feel excluded from preliminary discussions with Russia.
In response, European leaders have pledged to boost defense expenditures, and some are contemplating establishing a U.S.-backed EU peacekeeping force for Ukraine—a plan that the Kremlin views as a significant issue, though Zelensky has welcomed it.
“We stand resolute and strong. I depend on our Ukrainian unity, our courage, the solidarity of Europe, and America’s pragmatic approach,” Zelensky stated.
“America’s success is vital to us, just as much as ours is to them,” he added.
Furthermore, reports suggest that the ongoing disagreement with the U.S. aligns with a visit to Ukraine by Keith Kellogg, the U.S. envoy for Russia and Ukraine, according to Reuters and as relayed by Telegrafi.
Zelensky revealed that he would hold discussions with Kellogg on Thursday.
He emphasized the importance of making the meeting and overall cooperation with Washington “constructive.”
Upon his arrival in Kyiv, Kellogg mentioned that his purpose there was to listen.
“Together with America and Europe, we can ensure a more secure peace, which is our objective. Success is what unites us, and our unity is the strongest safeguard for our future—one that envisions a world without Russian President Vladimir Putin, but with peace,” said Zelensky.
On a related note, Trump’s claim that Zelensky is a “dictator” centers on the fact that Ukraine has not conducted elections due to martial law, which was instated after Russia’s aggression began on February 24, 2022.
This martial law provides the government with emergency powers for wartime purposes and specifically prohibits the holding of elections.
Zelensky’s term would typically have concluded last May, but he continues to govern since elections have not taken place.
