Neighborly Embrace Turns Tragic as Dogs Attack and Kill Woman

Elderly Woman Killed by Neighbor’s Dogs During a Hug in Tragic Attack

A 78-year-old woman from East Alabama died this week after being mauled by her neighbor’s dogs while sharing an embrace with her friend, authorities reported.

Patricia Marie Burt passed away on Tuesday, one day after the horrific attack in her neighbor’s yard in a rural area southeast of Beulah, an unincorporated community near the Georgia state line. The incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. on Monday, prompting a response from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrived to find several people attempting to assist Burt, who had been severely attacked by two large Cane Corso dogs. Witnesses said Burt had walked next door to visit her neighbor, a close friend whose son owned the home. As the two women hugged, the dogs suddenly turned on Burt.

Family members and neighbors tried to intervene, but the dogs refused to release their grip. It wasn’t until a family member retrieved a gun and shot both dogs that the attack ended. Burt was rushed to Piedmont Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia, where she succumbed to her injuries the following day. Both dogs died as a result of the shooting.

Thomas Burt, the victim’s husband, told WRBL-TV that he was the one who shot the dogs. “She was a good person. She was my friend, my best buddy,” he said. “We spent every waking minute together. I loved her so much.”

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the incident remains under investigation and will be presented to a grand jury for further review.

This tragic event has left the small community in shock, highlighting the dangers posed by aggressive animals and the devastating consequences of such attacks.
