Did the Economic Blackout Make an Impact? Results of the Nationwide Boycott
The first of three planned economic blackouts organized by The People’s Union USA has concluded. But did it achieve its goals? The initiative, which took place on February 28, called for a nationwide boycott of major retailers and businesses, urging participants to avoid shopping online or in-store at corporate giants like Amazon. Instead, supporters were encouraged to support local and small businesses for 24 hours.
Critics are questioning whether the boycott had any measurable effect, while organizers emphasize that their movement is not politically motivated but rather a call for systemic change. Here’s what we know so far.
What Was the Economic Blackout?
The People’s Union USA, founded by John Schwarz, launched the economic blackout as a 24-hour boycott of major corporations. From midnight on February 28 to midnight on March 1, participants were asked to refrain from purchasing nonessential items like gas, fast food, and retail goods. Essential items, such as medicine and emergency supplies, were exempt.
The organization stresses that its mission is to unite Americans across all demographics against systemic corruption and economic inequality. “We are NOT a political party,” their website states. “We are a movement for ALL people, regardless of race, gender, religion, or political affiliation.”
The group’s focus is on holding corporations, political leaders, and billionaires accountable for profiting off the working class. “Our goal is systemic change, not political drama,” they explain.
Did the Boycott Work?
The immediate impact of the economic blackout remains unclear. Major retailers have not reported significant drops in sales, and the level of participation has yet to be quantified. However, Google searches for “economic blackout” surged on February 28, suggesting widespread curiosity about the movement.
While the boycott may not have caused a dramatic financial blow to corporations, it succeeded in sparking conversations about economic inequality and the power of collective action.
What’s Next?
The People’s Union USA has announced two more economic blackouts: one on March 28, 2025, and another on April 18, 2025. Additionally, the group is planning a week-long boycott of Amazon in March and a separate boycott of Walmart in April.
