The reason many female Democratic lawmakers wore pink to President Donald Trump’s address to Congress on March 4 has been unveiled. During Trump’s first major speech to a joint session since taking office, the attendees included numerous female Democrats who made a striking statement in pink pantsuits.
Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández (D-NM), chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, explained that the color symbolizes their opposition to Trump’s policies. “Pink is a color of power and protest,” she stated. “It’s time to ramp up the opposition to Trump loud and clear.” This 96-member caucus has a history of using fashion as protest; last year, they donned white to honor suffragists and advocate for reproductive rights.
Interestingly, some Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.), also chose to wear pink, suggesting the color’s broader political resonance.
Fernández emphasized the negative impact of certain policies on women, particularly in working-class communities. “When a woman loses her job, she loses the ability to care for her family,” she said.
The protest went beyond attire, with several Democrats walking out mid-speech, revealing T-shirts with slogans like “RESIST” and “NO MORE KINGS.” Others held up placards denouncing the President’s claims.
Trump acknowledged the dissent during his address, remarking that no achievement would change the minds of his critics. “Nothing I can do,” he declared, suggesting that even monumental successes would not earn applause from the opposition.
