As a 5.2-magnitude earthquake shook the area, a herd of elephants at the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park quickly sprang into action to safeguard their calves.
A video captured on Monday morning shows five elephants initially standing calmly before the camera begins to tremble, prompting them to scatter. The older elephants—Ndlula, Umngani, and Khosi—then move to encircle and protect the two 7-year-old calves, Zuli and Mkhaya, from any potential danger.
For several minutes, they huddled together, with the older elephants alert and their ears raised, remaining vigilant even after the shaking subsided.
The earthquake was felt as far away as Los Angeles, located 120 miles from San Diego. It dislodged rocks on rural roads in San Diego County and caused items to fall off shelves in the small town of Julian, close to the epicenter. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or significant damage.
