Brooklyn Woman Fatally Shot During Argument at Barbecue
Tamika Powell, 36, was shot and killed in Brooklyn on Wednesday, June 25, following an argument at a local barbecue.
According to authorities, Powell was discovered lying unconscious with a gunshot wound to the head near Carlton and Pacific Avenues in Prospect Heights around 10:20 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by the NYPD.
Witnesses told PIX11 News that Powell was attending the event and left after a disagreement with a man.
Powell’s mother, Norma Campbell, shared with the New York Post that her daughter was at the gathering for about 15 minutes before the altercation. She described the sequence: “After the argument, Tamika left, and the man went into his apartment… came back out wearing a mask. He put on the mask and left in the same direction Tamika took. There was a moment of silence… then we heard a gunshot. People ran toward the sound and saw Tamika in the middle of the street,” Campbell said.

The suspect reportedly followed her for about a block, engaging in a verbal argument along the way. As she turned away from him, she was shot in the back of the head. Attendees at the barbecue confirmed hearing the gunfire.
Although the incident occurred near the Barclays Center during the NBA draft, investigators do not believe there is any link between the two events.
Campbell shared her memories of her daughter with PIX11, saying, “She lived life on her own terms, with no apologies or regrets. But she had a big, loving heart.”
She also spoke directly to the suspect, who remains at large. “You are a coward. You had the audacity to take a life. Come forward, regardless of the circumstances, it didn’t have to escalate to this,” Campbell stated.
Powell is survived by her two daughters, aged 12 and 13.
