Developed by the Japanese company Shimadzu Corp, the Aether Clock OC 020 is a strontium optical lattice clock that is being heralded as the most accurate clock in the world, having sold for over $3 million.
At first glance, the world’s most accurate clock may appear unassuming. However, its construction is so meticulously engineered that it would take approximately 10 billion years for it to lose or gain just one second, according to Shimadzu Corp, based in Kyoto.
The Aether Clock OC 020 boasts an accuracy level that is 100 times greater than that of traditional cesium atomic clocks.
While optical lattice clocks have existed for some time, the Aether Clock OC 020 holds the distinction of being the first commercially available model of its kind.
Shimadzu Corp began accepting orders for the Aether Clock OC 020 earlier this month and has already sold one unit for $3.3 million. The company aims to sell ten units in the next three years, with research institutions expected to be the primary customers.
