Remains of 1-Year-Old Found in Alabama Burn Pile Eight Months After Disappearance and Family Tragedy
FAYETTE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRC) – The remains of a 1-year-old child were discovered in his family’s burn pile nearly eight months after he went missing, and five months after his father and sibling were killed in a car crash. According to a press release from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation into the child’s death was finally resolved on Thursday.
The child was first reported missing on December 8, following a tragic car accident that killed his 2-year-old sister and critically injured his father, who died the following day. After weeks of investigation, Andrew Hamlin, District Attorney of the 24th Judicial Circuit of Alabama, stated that authorities believed the child had actually been missing for several months before the report was filed and was likely already deceased at that time.
In connection with the case, authorities arrested 22-year-old Wendy Pamela Bailey, the child’s mother. She faces multiple charges, including aggravated child abuse, first-degree domestic violence, abuse of a corpse, and criminally negligent homicide. Bailey was a passenger in the vehicle involved in the crash and was charged with negligent homicide because her daughter was not properly secured in her car seat at the time of the accident.
Further investigations revealed that another child was missing following the crash, which prompted the lengthy inquiry. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office announced that after multiple searches of the property, officers recovered what was believed to be the remains of the 1-year-old from a burn pile at the family residence.
