Fatal Incident: Sibling of Hockey Player Loses Life as Well

Sean M. Higgins, charged with the deaths of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew in August 2024, is seeking to have his indictment dismissed. Higgins, who acknowledged consuming alcohol prior to the crash, contends that the Gaudreau siblings were also intoxicated while riding their bicycles—a detail not mentioned during his indictment hearing. His defense team argues that this “contributory negligence” should have been brought to the attention of the grand jury. Higgins faces multiple charges, including reckless vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of the accident. Court documents reveal that both Johnny and Matthew had blood alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit for drivers, while Higgins’ level was below it. It’s important to note that riding a bicycle under the influence is also against the law. Higgins’ attorneys stress that they are not trying to excuse his actions but are advocating for transparency in the judicial process. Previously, Higgins was offered a 35-year prison sentence in exchange for a guilty plea. The case remains active as the court examines the new claims.
